What We Believe

At the heart of the Orthodox Christian faith is a deep and vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ. Our beliefs are not merely doctrines to be memorized, but a way of life—rooted in the teachings of Christ, the Apostles, and the Holy Tradition of the Church.

Orthodox Christianity is the original Christian Church, founded by Jesus Christ and sustained by the Holy Spirit through unbroken apostolic succession. We believe that Christ is the fullness of the revelation of God and that the Church is the Body of Christ, preserving the faith once delivered to the saints.

We believe that Holy Scripture is the inspired Word of God and is central to our life and worship. It is understood within the living Tradition of the Church—the continuity of faith, worship, and teaching handed down from the Apostles.

Our faith is summarized in the Nicene Creed, a statement formulated by the early Church at the First and Second Ecumenical Councils (Nicaea in 325 AD and Constantinople in 381 AD). It affirms the core truths of Christianity: belief in the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, His suffering, death, and resurrection, and the hope of eternal life.

When Orthodox Christians recite the Creed, we are proclaiming our faith in the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church—the same Church that has continued in faith and practice from the time of the Apostles. This confession shapes our worship, guides our prayers, and expresses our identity as followers of Christ.

Our faith is experienced most fully in the worship of the Church. Through the Divine Liturgy and the sacraments (or “mysteries”)—such as baptism, chrismation, confession, communion, and marriage—we encounter Christ and are united to Him. Worship in the Orthodox Church engages the whole person: heart, mind, body, and soul.

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
the only begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages.
Light of Light, true God of true God,
begotten, not made,
of one essence with the Father,
by whom all things were made.

Who for us men and for our salvation
came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.

And He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate,
and suffered and was buried;
and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures,
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead;
Whose kingdom shall have no end.

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life,
Who proceeds from the Father,
Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified,
Who spoke by the prophets.
